Baraut is a small city and municipal board in Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh, India. Previously, Baraut was within Meerut district until Baghpat district was split off from Meerut. Baraut is an education hub for the villages around it. Baraut is a constituency in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly; and, by profession, this constituency consists mainly of traders, farmers, and industrial workers, Baraut being famous for producing wheels and axles, which are used all over India in motor vehicles. In terms of religion, the population consists of Hindus, Muslims, Jains, with a minority of Sikhs and Christians. Employment[edit]
The main commercial activities in Baraut are general merchant shops, primary schools (public as well as government) and agro-based axle-wheel manufacturing units. Baraut City also have many brick field in vicinity and these are used in Uttar pradesh, Delhi and Haryana.
Demographics[edit]
According to the 2011 India census, urban Baraut has an estimated population of 150,992, of which 80,570 (53%) are male and 70,422 (47%) are female. Urban Baraut has an average literacy rate of 65%, which is lower than the national average of 74%, with 72% of males and 57% of females being literate. The census also showed that 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.[1]
Culture[edit]
Baraut is home to a wide range of religious faiths. As such, there are many Jain temples and Mosques in and around the city. There are thirty-two Jain temples, forty Mosques, one gurudwara and two churches in the region. The biggest temple is the Digamber Jain Bada Mandir which is one of the oldest temples, said to be hundreds of years old, is considered very important to the Jains of the town.[citation needed] There are a number of religious festivals held every year. A three-day carnival is held annually by the Jain community during Mahavir Jayanti, which celebrates the birth of Bhagwan Mahavir. Jains also celebrate the fair of Ucchav, which is the final ceremony on the tenth day of the Daslakhshani festival. "Rath Yatra" procession, which has many floats, starts from the Bada Jain Mandir to The Jain College Hall and returns the same evening. Another Hindu carnival is organized during Dusshera following Ramlila. Panchvati Temple is another major Hindu temple located in the heart of the city on the bank of the Nahar stream. This temple has three parts – the Goddess Santoshi Ma Temple, the Ram Temple and the Ganesh and Hanuman Ji TemplE. There is one Major Mandir of Sherwali Maa (Goddess Durga) in Hinduism. The city is infamous for its gangsters and criminals. The ICON of this city ischaudhary charan singh who was the MP here and also was Indian Prime Minister.
Education[edit]
Baraut town has been famous for higher education, especially in agriculture sciences, where most of the courses are available up to the research level in the fields of the sciences and agriculture.
One of those is Janta Vedic College, which is also known as Jat College, founded by local farmers and educationists, specializing in the field of agriculture.
Another is Digambar Jain College, which was founded in 1920.

JagMohan Institute of Management and Technology, opened 2011.
A college exclusively for women is Jain Sthanakvasi Girls Degree College.
The education department of Uttar Pradesh established the District Institute for Education and Training (DIET) for Baghpat district at Badka Road in Baraut.
Intermediate colleges are Janta Vedic Inter College, Digamber Jain Inter College, Mahatma Gandhi Inter College, Veer Smarak Inter College and Jain Sthanakvasi Girls Inter College.
CBSE schools include JP Public school & Vanasthali Public School.
Problems in development[edit]
Baraut is about 56 km away from Delhi. Despite its location in the National Capital Region, its development is poor compared to that of Delhi. Due to political reasons the central government had delebrately neglected transport system connecting Baraut to Delhi. Baraut is located on the State Highway No. 57.
